What is the hourly rate for a freelancer in Malta?
From about €10 an hour for cleaning and school tutoring to €40 to €70 for an hour of massage, with design and proofreading in between at about €30 to €55. The services in our guides that are usually priced by the hour, lowest first:
| Service | Per hour, 2026 | What the rate covers |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaner | €10 to €20 | An independent cleaner. Companies charge €15 to €25 |
| Private tutor | €10 to €25 | Primary and SEC subjects. €15 to €40 at MATSEC level |
| Dog trainer | €25 to €35 | A private session with your dog |
| Web or graphic designer | €30 to €55 | The two hourly rates we found published in Malta |

| Swimming instructor | About €40 | €30 for a 45 minute private lesson |
| Massage therapist | €40 to €70 | A one hour massage at an independent therapist |
These are the rates clients pay. A freelancer covers income tax, social security, travel and materials out of them, and earns nothing in the gaps between jobs.
Why do two quotes for the same job differ?
The biggest reasons are VAT, minimum bookings, what the price includes, and whether you hire one person or a company.
- VAT. A freelancer whose yearly turnover in Malta is under €35,000 can register under Article 11, according to the tax authority’s small enterprise guidelines, and then charges no VAT. One registered under Article 10 adds the standard 18% from the VAT Act. So €600 from one designer and €600 plus VAT from another are €600 and €708.
- Minimum bookings. Many cleaners book at least 3 hours, so the smallest visit costs €45 to €75. Swim schools sell a term of about 11 weeks for €195 to €230.
- What is included. A hotel spa massage can include the pool and sauna. A wedding caterer’s price includes service staff. Drinks are rarely in a catering price, and published open bar packages add €8.50 to €18 a head.
- One person or a company. A cleaning company charges about €15 to €25 an hour against €10 to €20 for an independent cleaner. A small website from a freelancer costs about a quarter of an agency’s starting price.
- Per hour or per job. An hourly quote can end up higher or lower than a fixed price, depending on how long the job takes. Ask for an estimate of the hours.
How do you know if a freelancer’s quote is fair?
A quote inside the range for that service is normal. Far below or far above it, ask why before you say yes.
- Find your service in the price table. Its guide explains what moves the price, and its category shows who offers it.
- Send the same short brief to two or three freelancers, so the quotes are comparable.
- Ask each one whether VAT is included and what the price covers.
Our guide on how to hire a freelancer in Malta covers the rest: where to look, how to check someone, what to agree in writing and what receipt you should get.
What should you charge as a freelancer in Malta?
Start from the range for your service, place yourself in it by experience and specialism, and tell every client whether VAT is included.
- The lower half of the range usually fits if you are new or have few reviews. The upper half is easier to justify with a record of results, or with specialist work such as MATSEC Advanced tuition.
- Price per job when the result is clear, like a logo, a website or a party show. Price per hour when the work varies from week to week, like tutoring or cleaning.
- Say whether VAT is included. Under Article 11 you charge none, so at the same base price a private client pays you 18% less than a competitor who adds VAT.
- Set a minimum booking if travel takes a large part of your day. Many cleaners book at least 3 hours for this reason.
- Show a starting price. A client who sees “from €25 an hour” knows at once whether you fit their budget. Few listings show a rate, so one that does stands out.
Our guide to starting as a freelancer in Malta explains how to register and when you need to charge VAT. Listing your services on Dapperlance is free, and the listing form has a Rate / Budget field for your price.
Where do these prices come from?
Every figure comes from one of our Malta cost guides, and each guide links the source of every price at first mention.
- Most figures are prices Malta providers publish on their own websites, from swim schools and caterers to design studios and DJ companies. The VAT rules come from Maltese law.
- Few cleaners and tutors publish rates, so their ranges are estimates built from the ones that do.
- No Malta proofreader or party DJ publishes a price, so those two are our ballpark. Proofreading comes from the published rates of the UK and US editing associations, converted to euro. The party DJ figure sits between the smallest published DJ booking in Malta and a published wedding package.
We did not survey freelancers, so the page gives the going rate for each service rather than a Malta-wide average. Each guide is re-checked once a year, or sooner when a source changes. If you quote these figures, please link to this page so readers can find the sources.
Mistakes to avoid
- Comparing a price with VAT to a price without it. €600 plus VAT is €708.
- Using a hotel or agency price as the benchmark for an independent freelancer, or the other way round.
- Treating a range as a fixed price. Every freelancer sets their own rate, and the quote you get in writing is the one that counts.
- For freelancers: quoting before you know what the client needs. Ask what the job includes first, because a price is hard to raise once you have given it.
