Musicians and bands in Malta
Dapperlance lists independent musicians and ensembles in Malta and Gozo: a string quartet with former Malta Philharmonic players, a wedding and event guitarist with duo and trio formats, a singer and pianist, and a jazz saxophonist and bandleader. Between them they cover church, civil and reception wedding music, funerals, corporate events and hotel entertainment. Message any of them for free from their listing.
What do wedding musicians cost in Malta?
Musicians in Malta quote per event, not per hour, and none of the performers we checked publish a rate card. We looked at Malta musicians' and bands' own websites in September 2026 and found only contact forms. The table below shows what usually drives the quote so you can compare two on the same basis. Any figure you are given is for that date, format and duration.
| Format | What the quote usually covers |
|---|---|
| Solo guitarist, singer or pianist (ceremony) | About 45 to 60 minutes of ceremony music, one location |
| String quartet (ceremony and drinks) | Ceremony plus an hour or two of reception background music |
| Acoustic duo or trio (reception) | Two to three sets, sound equipment included or not |
| Full band (evening party) | Two to three sets, PA and lighting, often with a DJ set between |
| Funeral or church service music | Fixed fee for the service, organ or piano and voice |
Four things move the price. Headcount: a quartet costs roughly four times a soloist because each player is paid. Locations: church plus a reception in another town is two set ups and travel, and Gozo adds the ferry. Duration: overtime beyond the agreed sets is charged per half hour, agree the rate in advance. Season: May to October is wedding season in Malta and the best known acts are booked a year ahead, so a winter or weekday date is cheaper and easier.
How to choose a musician or band in Malta
Listen to a live recording, not a studio one, and ask which musicians will actually play on your date. Larger acts rotate players, so the quartet you heard may not be the one that turns up. Ask about repertoire in writing (first dance, the ceremony pieces, anything you do not want), whether they bring their own sound system and who supplies power at an outdoor venue, and what the plan is if a player is ill.
Check the venue first. Some Maltese churches restrict what can be played during a Mass, and some venues have noise curfews or a decibel limit that rules out a full band after a certain hour. The musician will know the venue, ask before you book either.
Common mistakes to avoid: booking the party band before the ceremony musician (the ceremony has fewer options and books up first), assuming the quote includes overtime, and forgetting that the musicians need a meal and a break at a long reception. Write the deposit, balance date and cancellation terms into the confirmation email.

Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I book wedding musicians in Malta?
For a Saturday between May and October, nine to twelve months ahead for a popular quartet or band, and six months for a soloist. Winter and weekday dates can often be booked a few months out. Ceremony musicians book up before party bands, so start there.
Do musicians charge extra for church and reception?
Usually yes when they are in different places, because it means two set ups and travel between them. A quartet that plays the ceremony and stays for the drinks reception at the same venue is normally one quote. Ask for the price with both locations listed.
What deposit do musicians in Malta ask for?
A deposit on booking, commonly a quarter to a half of the fee, with the balance due shortly before or on the day. Cancellation terms vary, so ask what happens to the deposit if the date changes.
Can I request specific songs?
Yes, within reason. Most performers ask for your must play and do not play lists a few weeks ahead and will learn one or two special pieces such as a first dance. Very long custom lists may carry a fee for the rehearsal time.
