What does air conditioning cost in Malta?
Installing a split unit in Malta starts at about €100 in labour for a standard job, and the unit itself costs €200 to €1,300 depending on size and brand. The figures below come from Malta installers' and retailers' own published prices, checked September 2026. Most installers quote after seeing the wall, so treat these as a guide, not a quote.

Three things move the price. Pipe run: a standard installation covers a few metres of copper piping between the indoor and outdoor unit, a long run, core drilling through thick stone or an outdoor unit that needs scaffolding is charged on top. Electrics: a new dedicated circuit is a separate job for a licensed electrician. Season: from June to September installers are booked out, so a spring installation is both cheaper and faster.
How to choose an AC installer in Malta
There is no dedicated AC installer licence in Malta, so ask three things: who does the electrical connection, whether the installer is certified to handle refrigerant gas, and what the workmanship guarantee covers. The Building and Construction Authority's contractor licence, mandatory since 2025, covers demolition, excavation and construction, not AC work. Electrical connections must be done by an electrician authorised by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS). Handling refrigerant is covered by the EU F-gas rules, and an installer who has the certificate will say so on request.
Size the unit before you compare quotes. A bedroom of 12 to 15 square metres needs about 9,000 to 12,000 BTU, a living room 18,000 to 24,000. An oversized unit short cycles and dehumidifies badly, an undersized one runs flat out all summer. Ask each installer which size they recommend and why, the answers tell you who measured the room.
Common mistakes to avoid: buying the unit yourself before the installer has seen where the outdoor unit can go, accepting a cash price with no invoice (you lose the manufacturer's warranty claim), and skipping the annual clean. A dirty indoor coil is the most common cause of a unit that "does not cool like it used to".

Is there a government grant for air conditioning in Malta?
Not for air conditioning. The current REWS scheme, open to the end of 2026, gives a grant of up to €1,400 on a heat pump water heater, which is for hot water, not cooling. Check the REWS schemes page for what is open before you buy.
How often should an air conditioner be serviced?
Once a year, ideally in spring before the heat. A service means cleaning the filters and the indoor coil, checking the drain and the gas pressure. Filters you can rinse yourself every month or two in summer. Malta installers rarely publish a service price, so ask for it when you book.
What size air conditioner do I need?
As a rule of thumb, about 800 BTU per square metre of room, so 9,000 to 12,000 BTU for a bedroom and 18,000 to 24,000 for a living room. Sun facing rooms, high ceilings and glass walls push you up a size. Ask the installer to size it, and compare their answers.
Do I need an electrician as well as the AC installer?
If the unit needs a new dedicated circuit from the fuse box, yes, and the electrician must hold a REWS authorisation. Many AC companies have an authorised electrician on the team or bring one. Ask who signs off the electrical work before you accept the quote.
